"1991. We had been running a small indie label called Bad Vugum for a mere four years, but we genuinely felt we had found bands that made a difference, definitely in the budding Finnish scene at least. So in 1991 friends and even total strangers at gigs and festivals suddenly started telling us that the best two undiscovered bands come from a drab small town called Pori and that they both sounded exactly like they should be on Bad Vugum. Naturally our interest was piqued and we got to hear the self-released 7"s by these bands called Circle and Deep Turtle. Alas, we were not overly impressed. They’re still undeveloped, they still sound too much like their apparent musical heroes, and most importantly the songs aren’t strong enough, we convinced ourselves. To this day I still thank our lucky stars that Mr. Dassum of Deep Turtle, who recorded in the same small basement as Circle, called me and asked if we were at all interested in hearing some new Deep Turtle demos. Sure we were, and we sure got more than we bargained for: as a bonus he also included some new stuff from their friends Circle and we were blown away by both bands’ progression. We duly agreed to start releasing 7" EP’s at first, just to make sure the bands only put out all killer / no filler kinds of records, and to slowly build a following before any financially riskier album productions. During the next 18 months Circle for their part got two awesome EP’s out of their system, and absolutely floored live audiences all over the country with their high-intensity gigs. Which were more akin to hypnotic mass rituals, what with their glowing body paints, jarring lighting tricks and various blooddripping props. Sometime in 93 / 94 the guys and we both felt sure Circle were mature enough for a full-length. After unleashing them in the studio we got to hear quite a few mind-boggling new, slower songs they had concocted, then a few more. Then even more. We almost couldn’t believe our ears, it was becoming clear that a single LP could not contain these inspired goofballs’ creative output. Recently I discovered I still get goosebumps from listening closely to Meronia. Not just because I love just about every track on the album, but also because it brings me back to the days of trying to work out the best possible order for the songs. I’m always on a personal mission to "help" bands with that ( IMHO) essential dimension to any record, but Meronia’s sprawling bulk of 15 /16 tracks (we often added bonus tracks on the vinyl versions, even with single LP’s, just to mess with CD buyers) proved a daunting task. I spent literally days and weeks immersing myself in the music, switching and changing the song sequence every which way and those were the gruelling days of a double-deck cassette players, mind you. Then I spent hours on the phone with Circle’s Jussi, discussing and speculating what each track might "mean" in any particular order. I felt I truly lived on planet Meronia. In Finland, the album got rave reviews both in the underground zines and, somewhat surprisingly, mainstream press as well. Abroad, it opened some new doors in the underground, but surprisingly was not licensed for a foreign release. In those times small foreign labels still seemed to settle for 7" records for Circle. But it was still early days in what was later to become a global Circle industry as we know it - What is it now? Some 20 + albums, half of which on foreign labels? And whenever I talk to Jussi, Circle seem to have at least three albums already recorded and waiting for a release. They’ve sure succeeded in carving a respectable niche for themselves, while still taking chances and trying new things. Maximum respec’. To wrap this up, a funny Meronia anecdote. In the mid-90’s someone claiming to be an A& R executive for the David Geffen Company sent us a fax, complete with letterheads and everything, requesting a promo copy of Meronia. He wrote he was a big fan of the 7" stuff he had heard and was interested in checking out the band’s "album potential". We sent the CD, and waited for a reply. I mean c’mon, the label that made Sonic Youth huge, right? Well, since we didn’t hear anything, I first faxed the guy back, and then even called the number on the letterhead but it didn’t even connect... "The mysterious acronym "NWOFHM" was revealed to the world for the first time in 2005 when this mysterious sequence of letters dominated the centerfold of the booklet of Tulikoira, a studio album by prolific Finnish rock band Circle. It is likely that the meaning of NWOFHM was initially nonsensical to most of Circle's listeners, but some of them may have been able to dig up the phrase "New Wave of British Heavy Metal" from the nethermost recesses of their helmets, and to deduct that this variation probably referred to a localized Finnish version of this 80's phenomenon - only over twenty years too late. "The New Wave of Finnish Heavy Metal" may sound pompous and far fetched, but listening to the album the label does sound quite appropriate. Tulikoira is an album that consists of only four tracks but manages to explore quite a few moods and styles during its run. Album opener Rautakäärme would be a beautiful hymn if there wasn't a metal band playing riffs at a breakneck speed behind the vocals. The second song - Tulilintu - is a relatively short burst of energy and high-pitched vocals bringing Judas Priest to mind. The rest of the album goes off a on completely different direction altogether, with closing track Puutiikeri being a 20+ minute avantgarde jam bookended by bursts of heavy metal riffing. "My second exploration of the soundtrack works of Wendy Carlos focuses on her superlative score to Kubrick's Clockwork Orange. Carlos' compositions for the film were rooted in aristocratic classical masterpieces but also displayed her trademark darkness and sense of sonic disassociation, resulting in a perfect amalgamation of the highbrow and the severely fucked-up that fit Kubrick's vision to a tee. If anyone could make Beethoven sound violent and menacing, it was Wendy Carlos. I've attempted to tap into that sense of foreboding and violence with my work here. Again, while I in no way make the statement that these pieces hold a candle to Carlos' originals, I think collectively these compositions provide a pretty excellent overview of my aesthetic in this medium; from deep bass drones to crawling walls of sludge to all-out HNW fracturing, it's all here, in copious amounts. If nothing else, "Clockwork Orange: A Reinterpretation" serves as an overview of my myriad solo projects and a truly exhausting listening experience. At their best, I think they conjure up the wavering reality suggested by the film and serve as a devoted tribute to one of electronic music's finest innovators. "As a cinematography/film studies student, I am obviously enamoured with the work of Stanley Kubrick, and his version of Stephen King's The Shining remains one of my favorite films of all time. Equally impressive with regard to Kubrick's canon is the soundtrack work he elicited from Wendy Carlos. It's difficult to imagine Kubrick's films without her themes, and in the case of The Shining especially, her compositions set and maintain the tone throughout the whole film. It's easily one of the darkest pieces of music ever made for a film, unsettling and crushing in equal parts, and it remains burned into the brain nearly as much as Kubrick's imagery.
I decided to offer my take on this masterful score, and while I certainly do not believe my work comes close to being the equal of Wendy Carlos's, I am very happy with how this record came out. In the first section I've played up the suffocating, thick darkness present in the piece and taken it further out, creating a lengthy journey through Carlos's rich synthesizer composition and sound assembly. The second section offers up my more "rock" take on the theme, pushing it close to a caustic riff on suicidal doom noise catharsis before it collapses into a throbbing, bass-drenched wall. First time on CD for both these bands: Culver, possibly the most under-appreciated "experimental" musician in the UK who's been making some of the most awe-inspiring drone/noise for years. For those of you who don't know, Lee Stokoe plays bass in Geordie post-whatever geniuses Marzuraan as well as being the current foil to Matthew Bower's walls of scraping guitar noise in Skullflower, but Culver is his "main" project. Since resuming recording this past Autumn, F/I/T/H’s work has taken a new direction. Since the early 2000's, up until the UK tour in the summer of 2008, Gelsomina has been the musical outlet of Finnish Harsh Noise fiend, Pekka PT. A brutal mix of junk metal abuse and pedal worship, sometimes resulting in total unflinching chaos and other times resulting in a more structured industrial noise masterwork. Having released dozen's of tapes, cd's and vinyl it was never going to be an easy task to wittle it all down to CD length but through the critical eyes of the man himself, Pekka has managed to pull together 74 minutes of what he considers the best of his Gelsomina, and I couldn't agree more. Summer time fun recorded at Rocco's Bar in the centre of the toon. Jackal are up first which marks the first live effort of the duo of Mike Vest (Bong, Basillica) and George Proctor (Mutant Ape, Murder Book). This was first released in an edition totalling 17 copies on CD-r. Why? I couldn't be sure but when I first heard this release when it came out in 2006, I thought to myself; this is some the best Harsh Pedal Noise I have ever heard and it was obvious this had to be released in a bigger edition on a proper format as soon as possible as people needed to hear this. Turgid Animal hadn't released a CD yet and I was hoping this would have been the first one, so I sent quickly sent an email to Jake asking him if I could release it and he said yes. Unfortunately, delay after delay occured and it's only just seeing the light of day on CD now, but it was well and truly worth the wait. Both tracks from the original release feature here along with a bonus track from vault, sealing this discs fate as one of the best modern harsh noise releases to come out in a while. A ghastly trip through time. Very true to the original-remaster from the master tapes. "My favorite comic book series is undoubtedly "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." At their best, Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird charted an extremely dark and punishing journey through the psyche of four personalities trying to cope with ideas of tradition, honor, and their own emotional turmoils. Nowhere were these themes better exemplified than in the masterful "Return To New York" storyline, in which the four brothers go back to finish Oroku Saki, aka The Shredder, once and for all. Fans know everything was brought full circle from the first TMNT issue, including the epic final confrontation between Saki and Leonardo, where blood and honor converge in a brutal and eviscerating showdown. I have attempted to do justice to this beloved series with "For Blood, For Honor." All of the sounds on these two albums were created using elements from the theme song to the TMNT cartoon (not as good as the comics, but it had its moments) and I think they represent some of my finest work in the HNW genre. Interesting tale behind this one: Milton Grove Skum Band was recorded in Manchester in the basement of Gaz, Daz and Linds amongst others. The line up was a free for all and the instruments were everything from a destructed piano to a rain shaker to a rusty nail. A very claustrophic half hour... The second band of the disc is even more obscure. Lobster Preist were for some reason scheduled to play a Star Wars themed rave on the quayside in the centre of Newcastle. When the band were imformed they were meant to play it transpired that only the least likely member of the band to be available; was available. So Mike Smith had to gather the troops and build a band quickly, a band suitable for a Star Wars themed rave. He only managed to pull together the cream of the crop from the North East noise underground and had drugged up idiots dressed as yoda bopping all o'er't place in no time. A bizarre and pleasant evening only made more so by the bouncer kicking the door in when I was trying to have a shite... Old style CD-r fold over cover.

The only reason one can speculate why Nekrasov is a self-released album considering that its brand of towering, infernal, low-fi-yet-epic, raw-yet-atmospheric, power-electronics/death ambient-spiced contemporary black metal equals the quality of several bigger names in this scene, is that the people behind it are trying to stay kvlt. Thankfully not kvlt enough as this cd found its way to Terrorizer HQ and to these grateful ears.The band's website, on the other hand, claims that it is aold out already. The abstract parts on 'The Form….' Don't feel like atmospheric segues serving as mere introductions to the bestial tracks, which, in turn, echo classic BM and transcended it with a killer combination of cavernous treble onslaught, paper thin snares and mono cymbals juxtaposed on thunderous kick, all forming unconventional rhythms. "An unbelievable line-up on this one, UK noise icons The New Blockaders team up with erstwhile Sonic Youth bandmates, Thurston Moore and Jim O'Rourke with more than a little help from the reliably jaw-dropping Chris Corsano. It's a real force to be reckoned with, and the crispness of Corsano's kit works perfectly against the hiss and fizz from the tape-heavy, droning elements. It's all over rather too soon (the whole thing clocks in at just over twenty-one minutes), but you can hardly expect anyone to keep up these levels of intensity for prolonged periods, can you? This album definitely demostrates the direction in which Mr. Bower has been taking with his other projects as of late and could easily be described as Black Metal in it's purest form but this is no Skullflower rip off. Samantha's Davis' input has certainly altered Mattthew's musical vision and it is easy to hear the sound of a true collaboration at work.
